The College Counseling Program

At 红杏视频, the college admissions process is an opportunity for self-discovery. Students delve deep into their interests, hone their strengths, and explore their individuality. As a Friends school, we believe that each person has an individual spark within them and prioritize finding the right fit for our graduates.

Our College Counseling Team partners with students and their families to provide individualized guidance at every stage. This team is made up of:

We begin the process of thinking about post-graduation plans gently. 红杏视频 Friends students participate in group conversations with academic advisors and the Director of College Counseling to discuss course planning and goal setting.

Families are always welcome to connect with the College Counseling office with questions.
  • 10th Grade

In addition to a regular cadence of meetings with advisors and the college counseling team, 10th grade students work with their teachers to prepare for the PSAT, which all students take in the tenth and eleventh grade year.

The College Counseling Team works with students and their advisors as they plan junior year course selection.

Tenth graders end their year with a three-day Pre-College Program as part of their English courses. This miniature seminar introduces students to all aspects of the college admissions process.

The summer after tenth grade is a great time to tour college campuses and begin a wishlist for possible schools.
  • 11th Grade

Juniors take the PSAT in October as the first official step in their college application process.

That fall, parents and guardians attend the Junior College Meeting with their students to review major milestones and deadlines for the application process.

In February, juniors meet individually with the College Counseling Team to discuss their hopes for college. At a later meeting with parents/guardians and their students, the Director of College Counseling helps to create a specific plan that may include standardized testing, college visits, senior year courses, etc. Families also discuss with the College Counseling Team specific college recommendations based on student preferences, academic performance, and preliminary standardized test results.
  • 12th Grade

All seniors complete standardized testing by the fall of their senior year. This may include the SAT Reasoning Test, SAT Subject Tests, and/or the ACT with Writing.

Throughout the fall semester, the Director regularly meets with seniors to finalize college lists, complete college applications, and compile letters of recommendation and necessary school forms.

Students and parents attend a mandatory Senior College Meeting in September to ensure clarity around the application process and to set goals.

Seniors participate in “Senior Week” during which they partner with the College Counseling Team to begin the Common Application and supplemental materials.

To streamline efforts and ensure that seniors are putting their best foot forward, Common Application essay-writing is built into English courses.

Finally, the Director works with seniors and their families in making final decisions once acceptance letters and financial aid packages are offered.
